Otay Water District Fundraiser To Benefit SWC Students

By Ken Pagano

Otay Water District customers can celebrate water conservation with a proceeds benefit to assist Southwestern College Puente Project students. By exchanging their old toilet models for a new earth friendly ultra-low flush unit, eligible residents can receive up to two free models.

Otay Water District customers can exchange their older units for state-of-the-art flush toilet models. Residents need to bring proof of residency and a verifying water bill.

On Saturday, April 10, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Otay Water District customers can pick up new flush toilets at Southwestern College parking lot K and exchange their older units April 24. For every older unit received the Southwestern College Puente Project receives a $15 donation.

According to Jan Tubiolo, Conservation Coordinator for the Otay Water District, "San Diego residences are about 40 percent built-out with the new ultra-low flush toilets.

The newer flush toilets were designed and distributed as result of the water conservation law passed in 1992 to reduce water supply and demand."

Tubiolo said, "Collaborating with community based organizations is a triple win situation. The Otay Water District, Metropolitan Water District and San Diego County Authority are working with schools, communities and community based organizations to promote an effective use of energy resources. We live in a semi-arid environment that will be here for a long time. We just have to learn how to live with the environment."

The program was originally spearheaded by the Mothers of East Los Angeles and the Metropolitan Water District as a provision for water conservation and to educate low-income families about energy resource consumption and distribution. Older flush toilets are recycled as a road-base for asphalt, said Tubiolo. "The fundraiser is energy resource and conservation conscious."
