Original Pottery

The Pottery of Mata Ortiz, an exhibition of approximately 100 original pieces of pottery by artists from the Mexican village of Mata Ortiz, will be on view April 6 through April 24 in Grove Gallery at the University of California, San Diego. A reception will be held April 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. Admission to the exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. Most pieces in the UCSD exhibit will be for sale. Sizes will range from two inches to 18 inches high and pieces from $18 to $3,000.

 

The Interview

Worlds will collide when France's greatest living playwright brings his startling play The Interview to UCSD, which opens Wednesday, April 7 at 8 p.m. with additional performances Thursday, April 8 through Saturday, April 10 at 8 p.m. with a final performance Sunday, April 11 at 7 p.m.

The Interview is a play ahead of its time, a family drama for the age of globalization, a West Coast premiere by acclaimed French playwright Michael Vinaver, under the direction of faculty member Jim Carmody. Tickets to UCSD's mainstage shows are $12 General Admission, $10 UCSD Faculty/Staff/Seniors, and $6 Students. For more information call the box office at 534-4574.

 

Jazz in the Park

Beginning Wednesday, April 7, the San Diego Museum of Art, in association with KIFM 98.1 Radio, will present a new after-hours event that promises to offer something different and unusual every month. "Jazz in the Park!" will take place the first Wednesday of each month from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the San Diego Museum of Art.

Guests will never be bored at "Jazz in the Park." Guests will enjoy the region's jazz and blues musicians in performance - unique musical pairings and combinations put together by Chuck Perrin of Webster's Last Word Records.

The Spring lineup includes: April 7, A Blues Summit; May 5, Cinco De Mayo; June 2, An All-Star Guitar Summit; Besides the entertainment, a large display of cheeses, breads and fruits will be complimentary with admission. Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México

The sizzling sound of richly layered percussion, snarling brass and lyrical strings are the signatures of Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de México, which will shake, rattle and roll its way through a program of classical music by 20th century Mexican composers at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido on Thursday, April 8 at 8 p.m.

Focusing on compositions by Mexico's most significant 20th century classical composers, the program features works that range from romantic and lyrical to dramatic. Mexican-tinged folkloric themes make the exhilirating compositions easily accessible to listeners. Tickets are $21-$51 and are on sale now at the Center's ticket office, located at 340 N. Taste of The Arts

Swing, disco and Latin/salsa music by Rumble King, Groove Therapy and Zona Nueva will take center stage as part of the fullday of activities of Taste of the Arts by the Bay on April 10 in Chula Vista.

This free, family festival also spotlights two other stages of musical and dance entertainment; arts and exhibits and a silent auction; a variety of children's activities, and a salsa contest and food booths.

Taste of the Arts is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Marina View Part adjacent to Chula Vista Yacht Harbor. Free parking is available near the site.

 

Venezuelan Folk Art Exhibit

A vivid assortment of wood carvings and paintings from the Venezuelan states of Merida and Trujillo will be showcased during the San Diego Museum of Man's newest exhibit, "Images from the Andes: Venezuelan Folk Art" opening April 11 and continuing through Jan 1, 2000.

Displayed for the first time in San Diego, these enchanting and colorful wood carvings and paintings reflect the rich variety of Venezuelan folk art, which fit into three categories — daily life, political and religious. The San Diego Museum of Man is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

 

Odissi Temple Dance of India

Odissi Temple Dance of India, featuring the lyrical and graceful Odissi dance by the Patnaik sisters of San Diego — will be presented at 8 pm. April 16 in Mandeville Auditorium at the University of California, San Diego.

Odissi is one of the seven recognized forms of Indian classical dance. Originating in the eastern Indian state of Orissa and dating back to the second century B.C., it is known for its lyrical nature, grace and fluid movements. Tickets are $15 general admission; $12 for faculty, staff and senior citizens; and $10 for students. For tickets or additional information, call 534-8497.

 

Festival of Mexican Contemporary Dance

The SDSU School of Music and Dance, Center for the Visual and Performing Arts, and San Diego Dance Theatre will present a Festival of Mexican Contemporary Dance, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday April 16, 17 and 18 at 8 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre on the SDSU campus. Tickets are $12 general admission and $8 for students.

Performers include the Antares Dance Company from Hermosillo on Friday April 16, Utopia Dance Company from Mexico City on Saturday, April 17 and Alicia Sanchez Dance Company on Sunday, April 18. For more information, call Jean Isaacs at 484-7791.

 

"Wanted: Suitable Wife and Mother for Single Billionaire and His Orphan Daughter"

San Diego Junior Theatre presents Annie Warbucks (the continuing story of Annie), at the Casa del Prado Theatre in Balboa Park from April 16 through May 2. Show times are Fridays at 7 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays at 2 p.m. Admission prices are $5-$7 for seniors and children 12 and under, $7-$9 for adults.

A sequel to the Broadway musical smash hit Annie, this continuing story of Annie pulls on the heartstrings across generations. It is a classic story that can be appreciated by older audiences for its humor while touching the hearts of children through the trials of Annie. In the meantime, greed and intrigue set in as a plan is devised for the wealthy bachelor to fine a wife, making the adoption valid. Warbucks is given 60 days to find a "suitable" wife and succeeds, but only to find out that it was all a scheme to rob him of his wealth.
