Rancho San Diego Attendees at Cuyamaca College's Spring Fest `99 will "spring into action" through a series of free activities scheduled every week in April. Participants may mingle and meet local employers and perhaps get a job on the spot, or learn techniques to cope with a single parent, or find important information on environmental, health and safety issues.
"Spring Fest offers a month of free events that are fun and educational," said Dr. Sherrill Amador, Cuyamaca College president. "What better way to celebrate National Community College Month in April than to show the impact our community college has in providing information to our residents."
Kicking off Spring Fest `99 on Wednesday, April 7, will be the 5th annual Cuyamaca College Career Fair from 9 a.m. to noon in the Main Quad. More than 50 employers will be on campus with some interviewing and hiring on the spot. Employers expected to attend the free event include United Parcel Service, Women's Legal Center, Viejas Casino, Federal Express, Union Bank, Alvarado Hospital, YMCA, Cox Cable, San Diego Transit, California Department of Forestry, and the military, local law enforcement agencies and city governments. April is the month most retailers and many other employers hire particularly for summer employment. Participants should bring a resume and dress for an interview. The career fair is free and open to the public. Call 660-4437 for more information.
The 9th annual Single Parent Conference is slated for Friday, April 16 with registration beginning at 8 a.m. and concluding with door prizes at 2 p.m. Presented by Cuyamaca College CARE and New Horizons Single parent programs, the free daylong conference focuses on "Changing Time/Changing Strategies." The keynote speaker is Doris NG, Staff Attorney with San Francisco-based Equal Rights Advocates, at 9:00 a.m., followed by workshops beginning at 10 a.m., then a free lunch and Resource Fair. The second set of workshops begins at 12:30 p.m.
Workshops planned include Show Us the Moneywhere and how to find the high-wage jobs; How to Act Like an Adult While Par-enting; Parents and Children Challenged by Learning; CalWORKs Updates and Images; Training and the University Degree; and Self-Sufficiency Planning.
For conference information and to register, call 660-4288. For special accommodations contact 660-4239 (Disabled Students programs and Services).
Health professionals will be on campus for the annual health fair, entitled "Earning A Healthy Outlook," on Wednesday, April 21 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year marks the fair's ninth year on campus with physicians, nurses, fitness experts, alternative therapy consultants, health educators and others giving a variety of free screening and tests including vision, blood pressure and foot screenings, and tests for glucose, body fat, hearing and many others.
Campus police will provide important information on safety issues on and off campus. The Enrivonment Technology and Automotive Technology departments will also offer information on staying safe and healthy in those professions. There will be food, entertainment and prizes at the fair.
"Earth Day," on Monday, April 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is for job seekers interested in environmental issues and careers. This free event offers information on the industry, the growing specialty fields and the promising career opportunities. Cuyamaca College offers certificate and associate degree programs for students preparing for careers in environmental technology with an emphasis on hazardous material/waste management, occupational health and safety, and related opportunities. A new course at Cuyamaca will focus on biomedical research and safety.
All Spring Fest activities are free and open to all at Cuyamaca College, 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway.
