Jose Manuel Lerma

1929 – 2008

Jose Manuel Lerma left to be with the Lord on Friday, April 25, 2008 following a 5 year battle with bone marrow cancer. He was 79 years old. Born and raised in San Diego and a long time resident of Chula Vista. Jose was a devoted husband, loving father, grandfather, and patriot.

After graduating from San Diego High School (Go Cavers!) he served 23 years in the United States Air Force and retired as a Master Sergeant. After retirement he worked 19 years as a civil servant at North Island Naval Air Station.

Jose enjoyed serving as a member or officer of the following organizations: American Legion, Air Force Sergeants Assoc., LULAC, Elks, VFW, Toastmasters, AFA, Chula Vista Senior Volunteer Patrol, and Disabled American Veterans. Jose enjoyed playing and watching sports. He was a Handball Champion in the military, loved bowling (highest score 298), golf, racquetball, and played in men’s softball leagues until he was 75 years old.

Jose’s faith in the Lord Jesus Christ grew strong in the latter part of his life. His fellowship with the St. Pius Ultreya Men’s group meant a great deal to him.

He is survived by the Love of his life for 55 years, Martha, his wife. It only took 14 times before she said “yes” to the first date. They had three children, Albert, Rebecca, and Jose Jr. and have been blessed with eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He loved Life, his Family, his Country, and the Lord Jesus Christ. He touched many lives with his compassion and humor. He will be greatly missed by his family and all those who knew him.

Jose Lerma was laid to rest at the Glen Abbey Mortuary in Bonita, California.
