The C.S.U. San Marcos M.E.Ch.A. is hosting its 10th Annual High School Conference, which will take place on Friday, March 14th, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The goal and purpose of the conference is to motivate and inspire high school students to succeed academically and pursue a college education.

The theme for this year’s conference is: “Aprendiendo y preservando nuestra historia y cultura a través de la educación”. “Learning and preserving our history and culture through education.”

We are asking community groups and members as well as local businesses to sponsor the event by offering some form of contribution. Our goal is to raise $5,000.

In recognition for the support we receive we will be listing all generous sponsors of the conference on the itinerary as well as recognition by the campus, community and Latino media.

The High School Conference makes a positive impact in the lives of students, parents, and community as a whole and your contributions would help make this annual event a huge success. Please help us by investing into our community and the future generation of our society.

Health fair, presented by the American Diabetes Association

On Saturday, March 1, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., at the Kimball Park in the City of National City in California. The American Diabetes Association will present the 3rd Annual Diabetes Health Fair. This major public event is part of our ongoing Feria de salud: Por Tu Familia community education campaign. The American Diabetes Association anticipates more than 5,000 attendees.

This year the event kicks off with a one mile kids fun run at 9:00! Provided at no charge to the community, the Latino health fair will offer screening/testing and information on areas of specific health concern including diabetes, blood pressure, foot care, and vision screenings. The fair is presented as a family event in a fiesta setting. Partakers will be offered opportunities to win prizes and giveaways. Entertainment will consist of live local mariachi bands, salsa classes, and exercise demonstrations.

Diabetes is a serious illness that affects Latinos in disproportionate numbers; one in eight Latinos has diabetes in comparison to one in twenty non-latino whites. Diabetes is a serious and incurable disease caused by the inability of the body to produce insulin, a hormone necessary for converting the sugar we consume in foods into energy. As a consequence, abnormal levels of glucose accumulate in the body causing complications. The complications of diabetes include kidney failure, heart disease, vision deterioration, and lower limb amputations. Early diagnosis of diabetes helps to control glucose levels, and with the assistance of proper medical care, diet, exercise, insulin and oral medications, the complications of diabetes can be prevented or delayed.
