The San Diego State men’s basketball team has been picked to finish second in the Mountain West Conference by Sporting News in its 2007-08 college basketball preseason magazine. Junior forward Lorrenzo Wade is pictured on the cover of the publication, marking the first time during the Steve Fisher era that SDSU has graced a cover of a major college basketball preseason magazine.
In addition, the Aztecs had four individuals rated as the best in the MWC in various categories beginning with junior guard Richie Williams. A two-year starter, Williams was rated as the conference’s best penetrator and returns this season as the league’s top returning assist and steals leader.
Newcomers D.J. Gay and Ryan Amoroso were also among the league’s elite as Gay was anointed the Mountain West’s top freshman and Amoroso, a junior transfer from Marquette, was tabbed the conference’s best transfer. The last of the group was Fisher, who was listed as the MWC’s best recruiter.
In a rundown of the conference’s incoming recruits, the publication described Gay as a freshman point guard who can play in any league and listed Billy White among the top 100 college freshmen.
